            Friedman教授の講演要旨:

Many transformations that take place over time can only occur in one temporal
direction, and adults are highly sensitive to the differences between forward
and backward presentations of such events. This talk describes research on the
early development of temporal-directional sensitivity. In a series of experi-
ments,4- and 8-month-olds were shown forward and backward videotapes of events
involving the effects of gravity on liquids and solid objects and of the separa
tion of whole objects into pieces. 4-month-olds showed a significant preferenc
for the forward version of liquid pouring from a beaker to a glass. 8-month-old
looked longer at the forward versions of this and 4 other gravity-related event
but showed no directional preferences for the separation events. Several experi
ments indicate that longer looking at the forward versions of the gravity
stimuli is not a product of attraction to specific perceptual features of the
stimuli. Other studies show that young children (3 ? - 4 ? years of age) judge
backward gravity events to be impossible, but they are not sensitive to the
direction of eating a cracker or breaking a biscuit. The results support the
gradual development of temporal representations of psychological arrows of time.
