Probabilistic model for the outer atmosphere of Jupiter

Kyle HAVEN

Abstract

The outer atmosphere of Jupiter has many stable, large-scale structures including eastward and westward flowing jets and the famous great red spot. These large-scale structures persist despite very turbulent behavior on smaller scales. In this talk, we will discuss a probabilistic model, for the small scales, based on the formalism of equilibrium statistical mechanics and show how large deviation techniques can be used to determine the most probable large-scale solution implied by the small-scale probabilistic model. The model successfully predicts the great red spot in the correct location, and in doing so, helps to answer some of the open questions about the spot.
