About the School of Engineering Science, Department of Information and Computer sciences, Mathematical Science Course

※Faculty members belonging to the Area of Mathematical and Statistical Finance are members of the Mathematical Science Group.

After entering the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering Science (83 students), at the end of the first year, students are placed into one of three courses, Computer Science Course, Software Science Course, or Mathematical Science Course (maximum of 15 students), depending on their grades and other factors.There are also students who transfer into the third year.
From the second year onward, the Mathematical Science Course follows a different curriculum from the other two courses.

For high school students

When I was in high school, I liked math and spent a day solving one math problem. However, I was not good at short distances, such as solving 5-6 questions in 2-3 hours, so I failed to take the national university entrance exam and compromised and entered Waseda. University, I wanted to major in my favorite mathematics. Still, my parents told me that I could only be a teacher and my work was limited, so I enrolled in a department that did not major in mathematics, which is a good job. However, when I took the lecture, I wasn't impressed, and I was only interested in statistics in my specialty.

When I took the university entrance exam, I didn't have a mathematical science course at Osaka University. Still, if I was born again as a human being, I think I would take the exam here even if I could pass the University of Tokyo or Kyoto University. There are many fascinating things. Not only can you understand the mathematics of estimation and testing, but you can also understand that abstract theory and concrete applications are integrated, such as running it programmatically and verifying its merits. Moreover, in the process of understanding such things, high-quality logic is built in mind. Even when you are away from mathematics, you can see the essence that people cannot see. Also, even if you don't become a math teacher, many graduates go to graduate schoolmasters and doctors, use their favorite math, and demonstrate their abilities.

On the other hand, I am good at long distances, and after I entered graduate school, I spent many days proving problems that my seniors and teachers in the laboratory could not solve. At that time, I noticed that there are world-famous people at Osaka University, such as Professor Emeritus Suguru Arimoto and the late Professor Tadao Kasami (Department of Engineering, 1990-1992) in the field of information theory. After getting my Ph.D., I got a job in the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Osaka University, to recognize and attract my research in information mathematics. And now, I am a professor at my current workplace (mathematical classroom) on the same campus.

I took a detour and arrived at the mathematics classroom at Osaka University. I'm happy with my position as a teacher now, but I wish I had majored in my favorite math from the beginning.

Difference from Pure Mathematics

Mathematical Science is an area of study which applies and develops mathematics in order to analyze natural and social phenomena. The application and development of mathematics are two faces of mathematical science that are actually indivisible like a Mobius strip. An application gives motivations and hints for new developments, and a development brings new applications. While "pure mathematics" aims at solving unsolved problems and completing historical theories, mathematical science expands mathematics by formulating new mathematical problems and solutions underlying various phenomena. The state-of-the-art computer technology plays important roles. First, its fast development keeps providing a source of new problems to formulate. Second, its computational power helps to understand phenomena and suggests hidden mathematics.

Students of the Mathematical Science Course study first basic computer and software sciences as well as basic mathematics under the umbrella of the Department of Information and Computer Sciences, and then study modern mathematics as in mathematical departments, as well as statistics and other applied mathematics. The goal is to be armed with computers and mathematics, well-equipped enough to open a new era of knowledge.
